The goal of the research is to propose guidelines for designing the appropriate trashcans, to meet the needs of college students. The research, first observes the habits of students using the existing trashcan in colleges, then makes a survey of the usibility and requirement of the trashcan, and also applies the standardized interview. The results of the research offer the guidelines for the appropriate trashcan design. At last, do concept design according to the guidelines, then by means of questionnaire approach to findout the appropriate design. Some recommendations are made as follows according to the outcomes of the research: 1. To Set the capacity of a trashcan according to the average volume of trash of a classroom per day. 2. To enhance the convenience of distinguish the classification of trash by strengthen the application of color. 3. The classification sign of trash should include text description and icon. 4. To design trashcan should particularly concern about ‘will hands touch trashcan while throwing trash’, ’the convenience of throw trash’ and ‘the convenience of distinguish the classification of trash’. 5. The opening of a trashcan should be a small opening ordinarily, but if necessary, it can adjust to be a big one.
