According to the analysis and discussion of questionnaires, this study will provide some suggestions for education related staffs (i.e. parents, school and so forth) to guide students to choosing the vocational fields. The questionnaires are conducted by sampling 520 senior vocation students from 13 vocational high schools in Taichung-Nantou area. The efficacious fill-in rate is 90.9%. The analysis methods involve descriptive statistic (i.e. frequency distribution, mean and standard deviation), t-test, One-Way ANOVA, Pearson product-moment correlation, and Scheffe multiple comparison. The results were as follows:
1.There is a high positive correlation between students’ motivations for choosing vocational fields and degree of self-determination. Furthermore, the relationship between the degree of support and motivation for choosing fields are also high positive correlated. This result confirms to the theory of self-determination.
2.In general, vocational freshmen from Taichung-Nantou Area possess medium degree to self-determine the vocational fields. About 51% students select fields which they really wanted. Oppositely, about 43% students can not choose his interesting fields.
3.The family plays the most important role for vocational students to select field, the next is teacher and finally is the classmate or friend.
4.To compare the degree of self-determination by different backgrounds, results ndicate that schoolgirls are higher than schoolboys, private schools are higher than public schools, entrance application is higher than registration and assignment, given the situation of father with educational background of undergraduate is higher than graduate, whereas mother with educational background of college is higher than vocational education.
