We use a low-rate convolutional code as a mother code, and generate some high-rate punctured convolutional codes from the mother code. By using these punctured convolutional codes as ther outer codes, a single Viterbi decoder of ther mother code is needed to perform the multistage decoding. The inner codes are constructed based on set partitioning of a binary linear block code. The simulation results show that the proposed coding scheme outperforms the original mother code.
