He was ugly and failed the national exam and committed suicide with shame on the steps. After death, Zhong Kui protected the Emperor Xuanzong of Tang from evil demons. Zhong Kui was not like other gods worshiped by people in the Daoist pantheon, but he was respected and admired by all. His popularity was because of justice adored by common people and tragedy of fate concerned by scholars. The story of Zhong Kui began in the Tang Dynasty. With fork legend and scholar’s imagination, Zhong Kui has become an important place in religion, myth and art. Flourishing of Daoism in the Tang and Sung Dynasties, the Emperor Huizong of Sung himself was a crazy Taoist adherent, with his great support, Zhong Kui established his position as the other gods, and even was listed by its title in “Xuanhe Huapu”. He was established as a military god, but he reflected scholar’s personality and tragedy of life. By painting Zhong Kui, scholars also respected him as a scholar-hero. They express their thoughts and feelings through Zhong Kui, and that makes Zhong Kui not only a god but also their spiritual creation. There are countless folk works about Zhong Kui. All of them are religious themes in art. But the literary works about him include dramas, novels, paintings and so on. The main purpose of my thesis is literary works, especially the dimension to scholar’s Zhong Kui painting. My thesis “Research on Scholar’s Zhong Kui painting-from the Tang to the Qing Dynasty” It is divided into two parts. Part I discusses the development of Zhong Kui. It explores the process of Zhong Kui’s image from religious folk character to literature image. Part II offers an analysis, in terms of the image of Zhong Kui and the point of view of Zhong Kui painting from scholars. The core focus of this part will revolve around the spirits and image of Zhong Kui and its cultural deposits. 姜一涵 2009 學位論文 ; thesis zh-TW
