Summary: | 碩士 === 慈濟大學 === 護理研究所 === 97 === The purpose of this study is to compare multi-media CD-ROM with handout forms in alleviation of situational anxiety of families of ICU patients. Our research tools include the "situational anxiety scale" and the self designed "situational anxiety scale of intensive care unit patients ". The study period lasted from March 1, 2008 to October 31, 2008. The subjects included families of intensive care unit patients who were admitted to ICU for the first time and for more than twenty-four hours. This was a quasi-experimental research with “before-and-after studies”. The subjects were divided into experimental group (multi-media health education CD-ROM) and the control group (health education in handout forms) with 34 subjects in each group. The experimental group received "the families of ICU patients with multi-media health education CD-ROM" while the control group received health education in handout forms. Before the subjects visited the patients, implementation of pre-test anxiety scale was done followed by fourteen minutes of health education. After the first visit and before the second visit, subjects would be evaluated again with the "situational anxiety scale" and the "situational anxiety scale of intensive care unit patients ". The data collected were analyzed by the SPSS 15.0 software package. Based on the nature of the variables of the study, descriptive statistics, single-sample t test, independent samples t-test, paired t test, chi-square test, one-way ANOVA and repeated measurements were utilized as analysis methods for our hypotheses.
First of all, the findings of the study showed a positive correlation between the severity of illness of the patients in ICU and anxiety of their families.Secondly, subjects in the group of health education in handout forms had a significant reduction in situational anxiety of intensive care unit(p <.05), however, there was no significant reduction in situational anxiety. Thirdly, sujects in the group of multi-media health education CD-ROM had significant reduction in both situational anxiety of intensive care unit and situational anxiety (p <.05). Lastly, allthough health education in handout forms and multi-media health education CD-ROM did not show siginificant differences in reduction of anxiety, but the multi-media education group showed a better alleviation of anxiety compared to the group in handout forms. As a result, we recommend that introduction and demonstration for ICU care and hardware facilities should be propagated through the multi-media health education CD-ROM. Not only do patients and their families could obtain accurate medical information, reducion in anxiety and increased satisfaction in medical area, but also save costs of manpower and increase quality of nursing care hours.
