The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects on the use of Focused Words Recognition on adult students’ English vocabulary size and learning motivation. The quasi-experimental design was taken to examine three different groups of teaching treatments --- Focused Word Recognition, Focused Word Recognition Assisted Quizzes and Conventional Word Recognition using one-way ANOVA, ANCOVA and t-test with SPSS/12 program. The results are as followings:
1. There were significant differences among the three groups on the pretests of English learning achievement. The conventional word recognition group gained an obvious higher mean score than the two focused word recognition groups.
2. Through the experimental instructions, there were significant differences among the experimental groups and the control group on their posttest scores of English vocabulary size after excluding the influence of the pretests.
3. Through the experimental instructions, there was no significant difference among the three groups on the pretests and the posttests of learning motivations after excluding the influence of the pretests.
4. Twenty-seven out of 31 participants in the experimental groups had positive comments on focused word recognition method according to the survey of post-course satisfaction.
Lastly, the conclusions and suggestions would be made according to the results and the discussions as well certain thoughts during the process of experimentation.
