Grating lines were projected to fish body by projector and the grating images were captured by CCD camera. Fourier transform profilometry method was use to calculate the phase information from the distorted grating and related the phase information to the profile of fish body. The profile information, after smoothed, was used to create solid model. Furthermore, in order to understand the propulsion mechanism of fish, the undulation of fish was study. In this work, the steady straight swimming and fast start of carangiform fish were investigated. The locomotion of fish under investigation was recorded by CCD camera and then the backbone motions were extracted by finding the centerlines from the images of fish motion.
