To tackle this issue, we study edge-type LED BLUs with no LGP for the use of large-size TFT-LCD displays. The original design concept of edge-type LED BLUs with no LGP is based on the redistribution of light rays after their emission from LEDs. This has led to the study of the light intensity profile of various LEDs and especially the effectiveness of implementation of light modulation components in this work. Due to its ineffectiveness of light modulation component, an innovative structure is proposed: a highly directional LED is used and with no light modulation component. The simulation results have incontestably demonstrated the validity of our devised structure and its use in BLUs in terms of light extraction efficiency as well as luminance uniformity.
