This increase has caused a gradual rise in cardiovascular disease among various other diseases. According to the 2007 statistical analysis of the “Top Ten Leading Causes of Death” from the Department of Health, Executive Yuan, R. O. C. (Taiwan), the ranking of cardiovascular disease is now only next to malignant neoplasm; in addition, there is a positive correlation between cardiovascular mortality and aging. The occurrence of the chronic diseases have seriously endangered the health in general public and also created enormous expense for healthcare. Hence, chronic diseases have become one of the most threatening diseases in our society. The main objective of this study is to investigate metabolic syndrome and its significance in the elder generation. Using this generation as the target group, based on their characteristics and their physiological condition, one hopes to discover the correlation between metabolic syndrome and the elder generation. The objectives of this study are listed as below: 1. Analyze the occurrence of metabolic syndrome in the elder population in Tainan district. 2. Examine the relationship among the characteristics of the elder population, biochemical examination and metabolic syndrome. Thus, this study primarily focused on individuals chosen from the Veteran Hospital (with the target population being elder veterans) in order to investigate the meaning of metabolic syndrome. This study not only observes the issues of metabolic syndrome from various prospective, but also assists the Department of Health in understanding the importance and influence of metabolic syndrome in elder generation.
