The physical properties size of latex were examined upon adding different amount of NMA monomer and varying addition processes of NMA monomer during the emulsion polymerization. In this experiment, the particle size, particle size distribution and pH value were monitored. It is shown that the size of latex particles was enlarged and the value of Tg was raised after the addition of NMA. With the addition of NMA, it is shown that the film prepared from the acrylic emulsion kept the non-sticky characteristics and enhanced the water resistance. Meanwhile, on application of the latex coating on pine wood deeper penetration into the wood fiber is observed by microscope. The adhesion of the coating film toward wood surface is also increased. The adhesion of coating film is proportional to the depth of latex permeated into wood. Latex was then gone through several cycles of freeze and thaw in order to separate the polymer particles and liquid phase. After centrifugal force, the liquid phase was diluted, and analyzed by UV. It was found that the way of addition of NMA into latex can vary the concentration of NMA in the liquid phase.
