As the highest honor of small and medium enterprises, this award aims to set a business paradigm which the awarded enterprises can demonstrate and share their successful management models with other small and medium businesses. However, how significant benefit that those awarded SMEs earn for practical management after winning awards still remain to be reviewed. This study is to analyze eight indicators of award-winning enterprises (in recent three years), including capital adequacy ratio, current ratio, net profit margin, return on equity, operating profit margin, receivables turnover ratio, total assets turnover, and revenue growth rate, comparing to the relative management performance with other businesses in the same period to detect the predictive validity of “National Outstanding Small and Medium Enterprises Award”. After comparing 31 “award-winning” enterprises and 31 “non-award-winning” enterprises, the result indicates that the capital adequacy ratio, current ratio, operating profit margin and receivables turnover ratio of “award-winning” enterprises are significantly better than “non-award-winning” enterprises. Meanwhile, there is no significant difference in net profit margin, return on equity, total assets turnover and revenue growth rate between “award-winning” enterprises and “non-award-winning” enterprises. Overall, the empirical result of this study shows that the operating performance of “award-winning” enterprises is relatively better than “non-award-winning” ones, and it increases steadily after enterprises were awarded. It shows that the potential excellent businesses can be selected through the “National Outstanding Small and Medium Enterprises Award” mechanism. In other words, this award actually has good predictive validity in business operating performance. Moreover, the research offers some practical suggestions that we can select small and medium enterprises which are excellent in management and have substantial contributions to society through the design of evaluation standard and accessing procedures. That is, the “National Outstanding Small and Medium Enterprises Award” corresponds to its purpose and reaches the presumption that to select the target groups simultaneously.
