And what is considered to be the correct sex/gender for her/him ultimately turns out into putting the relationship with herself/himself and others into tension. The protagonist Rose Loveall being unable to accept the sex/gender that the nature has given to her/him, conflicts between her/his self and the world burst out. Therefore, this thesis is to reexamine the effects of such a natural sex/gender system, the influence of cross-dressing to identity, and the enlightenment of sexuality, as well as on the discussion as to why these issues have put Rose’s struggles against the constructed social concept of sex/gender. Dividing this thesis into five chapters, the researcher can review the arguments regarding sex/gender and the term ‘Queer’ in Introduction. Chapter One gives further details of what is natural sex/gender, and examines whether it is as natural as it seems. Chapter Two continues with the discussion of cross-dressing, and aims to analyze whether clothes define one’s gender or not. Chapter Three is to put Rose’s sexual desires toward both the sexes into contestation. At the end, the conclusion sums up the results and findings in each chapter, along with the perspectives that this research has uncovered. Yu-Hui Huang 黃裕惠 2009 學位論文 ; thesis 92 en_US |
