Summary: | 碩士 === 世新大學 === 社會心理學研究所(含碩專班) === 97 === To investigate Taiwanese females' motives for cosmetic surgery, a survey was conducted to collect empirical data. The sample collected from females inquiring or ready to proceed with cosmetic surgery in cosmetic medical clinics. Investigate the impact of body image, interpersonal relationships and media reports on females’ motives for cosmetic surgery were examined. The purposive sampling of 363 females via physical and internet sampling in Greater Taipei area were used. The measurement in the survey included: "Acceptance of Cosmetic Surgery Scale", "Body Image Scale", "Self-Attitude Scale", "Interpersonal Influence Towards Appearance Questionnaire", and "Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire". The Multiple Regression Analysis was used to analyze the date, the research findings are as follow:
1. There are significant impacts of interpersonal influences, media influences, appearance evaluation, and appearance orientation on the motives for cosmetic surgery. Specifically speaking, higher level of interpersonal influences and media influences would generate stronger motives for cosmetic surgery; while subjects with lower appearance evaluation and appearance orientation would exert higher motives for cosmetic surgery.
2. There are significant impacts of interpersonal influences and media influences can predict the level of appearance evaluation and appearance orientation. Specifically, higher interpersonal influences would have higher appearance orientation; while those with higher media influences will have lower appearance evaluation and higher appearance orientation. The mediating effect of appearance evaluation and appearance orientation is confirmed.
3. Self-esteem moderate the impact of both interpersonal influences and media influences on body image.
4. Age moderate the impact of both interpersonal influences and media influences on body image.
5. Occupation moderates the impact of body image on motives for cosmetic surgery.
Finally, some practical recommendations for females interested in cosmetic surgery and cosmetic clinics were proposed. In terms of the study limitations, some suggestions for the forward study were also recommend.
