Japan is a country, which values courtesy and manner very much. Thus Japan has its unique culture of greetings. This dissertation is subject to the Japanese greeting “DOUMO”. This is based on the greetings of collocation via the examples from novels and plays. By using conversation analysis, we can see how they greet each other under different circumstances of seeing each other for the first time and meet each other again. Also we can examine how the greeting DOUMO influences the Japanese people getting alone with each other, the ethics value of Yamato Minzoku, and the life style in Japanese society. Also we can see the background and the reason why people use those greetings based on the point of view of social linguistics. At the end we can see the different aspects of DOUMO. According to the purposes, we have 3 intentions, gratitude, apology, and socializing. Also we can see the features by analysis those intentions and explore the status of the phrase “DOUMO” in Japanese language.
