Summary: | 碩士 === 靜宜大學 === 化粧品科學系碩士班 === 97 === The saponin in pericarp of Sapindus mukorossi has been used as a natural detergent and the extract of the pericarp is now commercially utilized as a foam-stabilizing emulsifying agent. Some biological activities were found in the saponins of plants. The saponin characteristics of Sapindus mukorossi have little discussed yet. The aim of this study is to investigate the foaming properties and biological activities including antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the saponins from S. mukorossi.
The saponin content of the crude saponin from S. mukorossi is 14.2. The total sugar content of the crude saponin is 31. The foaming power of the 0.5 crude saponin solution from S. mukorossi is 90.0 of 0.5 SLS solution. With the reducing of surface tension, the 0.5 % crude saponin solution from the plant has the wetting ability. But it is weaker than the general detergent, SLS.
In the antioxidant assay, the crude saponin exhibited significant DPPH radical scavenging activity with IC50 value of 2.61 mg/ml. The percentage of ferrous ion chelation effect of 10 mg/ml crude saponin is less than 40%. The total polyphenol content of the crude saponin is 33±3.6 g/mg.
The results of the microbial test reveals that the 0.1 crude saponin from the pericarp of S. mukorossi prove to be antimicrobial -effective against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, but inefficacious against Escherichia coli ATCC 8739.
