When age goes up, adolescents will be having even more opportunities to be affected by influence of societal factors. In recent years, people valued the topic of “gender role” more and more. Thus, this study would like to discuss the differences that gender role brings to body image, the distinction that influence of societal factors causes to gender role, and the correlation between influence of societal factors and body image of high school and vocational high school students in Taipei city. The study used Questionnaire Survey method; 1265 effective samples were acquired through convenience sample method. Research instruments included “Personal Background Questionnaire”, “Sex Role Scale”, “Societal Factors Scale”, and “The Revison the Translated Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire”. The obtained data was analyzed by Chi-square, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe’s method, Discriminant Analysis, Pearson product-moment correlation analysis, and Multiple regression analysis. Research results obtained were as follows: 1.681 students (56.4%) of Taipei city’s high school and vocational high school have normal somatotype, accounting for the largest group. 296 students (24.5%) were underweighted and this was the 2nd largest group. Most of the students in Taipei city’s high schools and vocational high schools did not differentiate into any gender role type; i.e. most of them were undifferentiated. 2.The “influence of societal factors” from this study had lower influences on students in high schools and vocational high schools. Students of high schools and vocational high schools in Taipei city tended to have better “body image”. 3.Students in high schools and vocational high schools that were with different “gender”, at different “grade”, and in different “schools” had obvious differences in “gender role”. However, high school students and vocational high school students that were with different “somtatotype” had no differences in “gender role”. 4.High school and vocational high school students with different “gender” and in different “school” had obvious differences in “body image”. However, high school and vocational high school students at different “grade” and with different “somatotype” had no differences in “body image”. 5.“Parents”, “peers”, and “media” can effectively distinguish high school and vocational high school students’ gender role. 6.High school and vocational high school students that were with different “gender role” had obvious differences in their “body image” (F=36.70, p<0.001). Besides, in “body image”, androgynous is better than masculine, while masculine is better than feminine and feminine is better and undifferentiated. 7.“Media” and “body image” of high school and vocational high school students had obviously low positive correlation (r=0.17, p<0.01). “Influence of societal factors” and “body image” of high school and vocational high school students had obviously low positive correlation (r=0.11, p<0.01). 8.“Male”, “high school”, “media”, “peers”, and “gender role” of students in Taipei city’s high schools and vocational high schools had 15.3% prediction power on “body image”. 9.“Male”, “private high school”, “media”, “peers”, and “gender role” of students in Taipei city’s high schools and vocational high schools had 15.9% prediction power on their “body image”. According to the research finding, suggestions were made to educational institutes, parents, related extension institutions, and further study respectively.
