This research is aimed at finding out the current aesthetics of adolescents. Method of research adopted is in Quantitative Research. At the beginning, related literatures are gone through and followed with sampling from schools in Changhua County and Changhua City: Grade 2 and Grade 3 students of 2 Public senior high, 4 public vocational high, 2 private senior high and two private vocational high. There were 1140 students accepted our questionnaire survey in February and March of 2009. Total 1140 copies of questionnaire were posted and recovered 1103 copies of valid and answered questionnaire. The recovering rate is 96.75%.
The tool for this research is adolescents Aesthetics Scale. The scale is comprised of two major parts: 1. The individual and family background of surveyed adolescents and 2. adolescents’ Aesthetic Scale, including Face, Hair Style, Clothing and Bearing. The recovered data was processed with SPSS 12.0 Statistics Software. Analysis and comparison were done with descriptive statistics, frequency distribution, factor analysis, independent sample T test, one way ANOVA, Scheffé Method for post comparison, Pearson Product-Moment Correlation. Important findings are listed below:
1. In face aesthetics:
(1) The levels of importance of factors in face aesthetics of adolescents, in order from high to low, are “Shinning Fair and healthy beauty”, “Clean and neat beauty”, ”Plain and natural beauty” and “Modern and fashionable beauty”
(2) There are significant difference in face aesthetics of adolescents due to factors like Sex, Height, Weight, School attending, Department studying, Individual religion, Home Finance and Level of education of mother.
2. In the aesthetics of Hair Styling:
(1) The levels of importance in aesthetics of hair styling of adolescents, from high to low, are Beauty of clean and neat, Beauty of symmetry and harmony, Beauty of light and nature, Beauty of creativity, Beauty of tradition and conservatives.
(2) Adolescents have significant difference in aesthetics in hair style due to factors like Sex, Height, Weight, School attending, Department studying, Type of family and Family Finance.
3. In aesthetics of clothing:
(1) The importance level of aesthetics of adolescents in clothing, from high to low, are Coordinated and balanced beauty, Comfortable and clean beauty, Gentle and elegant beauty, Practical and realistic beauty, Fashion and glaring beauty and Neat and orderly beauty.
(2) Adolescents’ aesthetics in clothing gave significant difference due to factors like Sex, Height, Weight, BMI, School attending, Department studying, Type of family and Family Finance, Education background of father and Education background of mother.
4. Aesthetics in bearing
(1) The importance level of adolescents in aesthetic of bearing, from high to low, are Bright and normal beauty, Elegant and proper beauty, Freak and peculiar beauty , Rough and indecent beauty.
(2) Aesthetics o bearing of adolescents differs significantly due to factors like Sex, School attending, Department studying, Individual religious belief, Family finance, Education background of mother.
5. In the correlation of aesthetics of adolescents among Face, Hair Style, Clothing and bearing, the following were found:
(1) Significant high positive correlation between Face and Hair Style aesthetics.
(2) Significant high positive correlation between Face and Clothing aesthetics.
(3)Significant medium positive correlation between Face and Bearing aesthetics.
(4) Significant high positive correlation between Hair Style and Clothing aesthetics.
(5) Significant medium positive correlation between Hairstyle and Bearing aesthetics.
(6) Significant medium positive correlation between Clothing and Bearing aesthetics.
Putting all above important findings, we can find out the general situation of aesthetics of adolescents in Changhua Area and the correction among aesthetics and the affecting factor. The results of the research indeed can provide reference for social life aesthetics, life applied science, such as beauty and hair styling department, clothing department, home economy department and related education units.
