Hamasen was the center of Kaohsiung area, but due to the transition of the urban style, the urban expands to northeast part of the city, the Hamasen then become downfallen. In recent years, the issue of cultural conservation becomes more and more important to the public. Kaohsiung government precedes the development of the city toward to cultural tourism. But, for the maintainability and planning on historic area, historic private area, and historic public building are always short of the proposal about real actions. This study undertakes the historic area as well as the building to be the literature research and fieldwork targets. The goal of the study is to observe the transition of this historic area from Japanese-Occupied Period to now. According to the space information during Japanese-Occupied Period, and via historic pictures and image recording, we can observe the transition of whole the Hamasen area clearly and directly, the study attends to define the range for investigating in Hamasen area. Using the façade elements of the building in Japanese-Occupied Period, we can easily identify the building of the period. This study uses 51 un-fixing buildings and 48 fixing buildings as database for analyzing. The recorded buildings are classified according the building years and their architectural styles. In terms of this process, we can then discuss how the buildings reflect the urban development of Hamasen area. The results of this research find that the continuity of the street buildings are the main elements during the transitions of urban. The characteristics of the façade of buildings can be thus used to be a important context for analyzing Hamasen area. These buildings are also the main architecture in Japanese-Occupied Period and they represent nowadays an important value of the development of Hamasen area. The contributions of the study are on one hand, the investigated builds can be identified clearly as the Japanese-Occupied Period buildings. The studied area of Hamasen can also define as the 「Historic Area of Hamasen」. On the other hand, this conclusion can be referred by the government and residents to develop an suitable urban planning policy of this historic area. Chi-Jen Chen 陳啟仁 2009 學位論文 ; thesis 246 zh-TW
