The proposed design is novel in the sense that it effectively adopts the dead-center configurations of the mechanism to increase the stability of the sofa bed, as this feature has not been found in previous patens and studies. In this research, several possible kinematic structures of six-bar linkages for the new sofa bed mechanisms are first synthesized based on Yen’s creative mechanism design methodology, in which the dead-center configurations are incorporates as design constraints. Among the synthesized structures the three types of the Stephenson’s linkage are chosen for further study, and analytical procedures for dimensional synthesis of function generator with two and three precision points are established. By in depth evaluating the results of the dimensional synthesis, it is found that the Stephenson type Ⅲ linkage is more suitable for convertible sofa bed than the other two types.
