In recent years, the development of small wind turbines is extremely fast. The small wind turbine has great potential to be installed in the residential districts and suburbs and be connected to low-voltage residential distribution systems. The voltage level, short-circuit capacities and robustness of low-voltage residential distribution systems are much lesser than those of high-voltage distribution systems. Hence, small wind turbines may adversely affect the security and reliability of the low-voltage residential distribution system connected. This problem should be researched in a more detailed manner. The research topics of this thesis includes: data collection and analysis of structures, characteristics and operation requirements of low-voltage residential distribution systems; research on the future trend and grid-interconnection codes of small wind turbines; formation of full-scale circuit model for a typical low-voltage residential distribution system; assessment of short circuit capacity and analysis of operation characteristic of a typical Taiwan low-voltage residential distribution system; and evaluation of maximum allowable capacity of small wind turbines connected to a low-voltage residential distribution system. The research results are of value to realize the impact of small wind turbines on a low-voltage distribution network; to establish grid-interconnection codes for Taiwan, and to correctly install small wind turbines.
