An experiment was conducted in which 10 right-handed participants were required to move a cursor into a target sphere as quickly as possible. There were 3 target sizes, in 3 distances, and 17positions. Performance was measured by a record of reach time, adjust time, total time, and moving trajectories. The result showed that target sizes, target distances, and target positions significantly affected performance. Mean total time in Z axis (4.93 s) was longer than that of X, Y, and XY axes (ranged from 3.53 - 4.31s). Total time of the upper directions without depth (4.69 s for upper left; 4.97 for upper, and 4.58 s for upper right) tended to be longer than with. Participants adopted a directly moving strategy to targets in these positions and result in time saving. Whereas, they moved in XY plan and then reach for Z axis thus while acquiring targets in the X and Y plans thus result in a longer moving time. The goodness of fit of the data to Fitt’s function is better for targets without depth (R2=0.94) than those with (R2=0.84). This study indicated that the drift of Z direction, target position, and the presentation of depth cue should be took into consideration for their potential contribution in target acquisition with free hand in a 3D environment.
