To focus on the deeper research of Ding Shiahshu’s painting styles and skill, I had the conversations with his relatives and friends, collected and classified his works chronologically. When Ding Shiahshu studied in Shanghai and WuChang, he contacted the free trend of thought and painting skills, forming the western-eastern fusion of painting and sketching philosophy, which was the base of his creation. Ding Shiahshu’s pastel painting emphasized the expression of personal emotions, stressing on the “line” and “color contrast” and utilized black to blend the appearance of the picture. Ding Shiahshu kept sketching with pastel in his late ages, indirectly carrying effect on the brightness and boldness in his ink painting. Ding Shiahshu came to Taitung in 1968, bringing in the traditional art in Mainland China and enriched the art history of Taitung. His persistence in the natural painting attitude worked upon the art creative style of Taitung and developed many art creators. After his retirement, he put more emphasis on the art-relevant issues, provided his artwork for rummage sale, and helped those minority groups in Taitung. Furthermore, with Ding Shiahshu’s easy-going nature, his congenial friends often sent their artwork to him as a gift without a sparing hand. So, the influence Ding Shiahshu brought to people was not confined to the intellectuals but the public. The art critic Suen Chi said: “Ding Shiahshu gets no fame and profits but his passion towards art and attitude of education leave a good example for the followers. Ding Shiahshu was not born in Taitung but devoted most of his life to Taitung. What he left will make the art history of Taitung a new turn. LIN YUNG-FA 林永發 2009 學位論文 ; thesis 180 zh-TW
