碩士 === 國立臺灣藝術大學 === 音樂學系 === 97 === The ballades are among Chopin’s best works. The significance of Chopin’s ballades lies in their literacy reference aswell as the timing of their composition. The present study intends to focus on the two areas mentioned above: the ballades’ literacy reference and timing of their composition. In the second section of Chapter two, detailed discussions will be provided in such areas as the compositional timing, the composer’s motives, and the social background. The third section of Chapter two will focus on the genera ‘ballad,’ from which Chopin drew the literary title ‘Ballade.’ The history of characteristics of the traditional ballad as well as those of Chopins’ Ballades will also be examined. In the fourth chapter, the analysis and interpretations of Chopin¹s Ballades will then be discussed based on the background studies provided in the first three chapters. The presentstudy will focus on drawing such literary relationship as well as thereasons as to why the composer wrote the pieces, in hopes to benefit future performers with further understanding of the works.
