The study aims to analyze the images of the elders in the prizewinning works of Chiuko’ s Modern Children’ s Literature Award , chosen as the literary text. Chiuko’ s Modern Children’ s Literature Award, the only one in Taiwan to solicit young adult fictions, attempts to encourage the productions in children literature, improve the level of children literature in Taiwan, as well as develop children’s global views and their care to society and life. The award is considered as the benchmark of young adult fictions in Taiwan. The researcher chooses the text as a result of the abundant and various images of Chinese society.
Based on the sociology and psychology of aging, the researcher organizes the text related to the images of the elders in Chiuko’ s Modern Children’ s Literature Award and concludes that the elders represent the roles of a leading character, a helper, and a donor in the majority according to Propp’s theory of role differentiation in Morphology of the Folktale. The study explores the images of the elders in young adult fictions and analyzes their views of life and value. In terms of the appearances, the inner, the relationships between the elders and their children, grandchildren, friends as well as nature, the belief of cultural generation , and their ways of thinking.
Aging is one of the lessons in life. The structure of population shows that the proportion of the elders increases. To sum up, the elders overcome the facts of aging, help others voluntarily, treat their descendent gently, confront the future diligently and firmly, solve the difficulties of their descendent by sophisticate wisdom, at the same time, pass down the experiences and cultural knowledge, and reveal the abundant cultural image. The elders perform perfectly in the long life marathon. Of great worth, the elderly women change their attitudes toward life. Furthermore, they are self-approval and do their best to brighten their life.
