Abstract
This research mainly intended to propose a project of curriculum of still thoughts fitting with character education for grade three students at elementary school, and evaluated the effect of such project in enhancing attitude or behaviors of students’ character, and further discussed the difficulties and corresponding strategies in design and implementation of this project.
This research took grade three students at an elementary school in Pingtung city as research subjects. For the experiment group consisted of 31 students, 10 units (800 minutes) of instruction projects of still thoughts were designed based on five characteristic content of “responsibility”, “respect”, “trustable”, “fairness” and “consideration.” As for the 31 students in control group, they were remaining receiving the original style of education. Through analysis emphasizing both in qualitative and quantitative aspects, this research took the “scale of character for elementary school students” designed by Li, Shun-Yu (2005) as measurement to conduct pretest, posttest and sample tracking. Independent One-Way ANOVA was also adopted to verify the immediate and continuous outcome of such project. The data collected during the experiment were arranged and analyzed to deeply comprehend the appropriateness and changes of students’ character behaviors of the project. Besides, this research also listed the difficulties and corresponding strategies in phases of design and implementation.
Four conclusions were gained in this research:
1. There were immediate effects of enhancing character behaviors in aspects of “responsibility”, “respect”, “trustable” and “consideration” for grade three students after receiving instructions of still thoughts.
2. There were continuous effects of enhancing character behaviors in aspects of “responsibility”, “respect”, and “consideration” for grade three students after receiving instructions of still thoughts.
3. Still thoughts teaching was approved with positive attitude by parents and students, the subjects in experiment group considered such project as highly acceptable, and felt positive changes in their characters, therefore, such project was appropriate for grade three students at elementary school.
4. The project design, teachers’ attitude and teaching style of still thoughts teaching would influence the smoothness of curriculum, preference and willingness to learn of students.
