The research also compares the difference under diverse background variables. Furthermore, the research analyzes and predicts teaching effectiveness influenced by teachers’ motive of participation in the in-service education. Finally, conclusions and suggestions are presented as references to motivate social studies area teachers’ participation in the in-service education and enhancing their teaching effectiveness as well. The researcher adopts questionnaire survey, stratified random sampling from the social studies area teachers of elementary school in Taoyuan County. As a whole, are sent out, with 457 valid copies out of 484 copies of questionnaires, the valid rate is up to 94.42%. The data results from the statistical methods such as the t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffé’s posteriori comparison, Pearson’s correlation and multiple regression analysis. At last, based on the findings, the researcher comes up with the following conclusions: 1. Among the motives of participation in the in-service education for social studies area teachers of elementary school in Taoyuan County, the “interest on knowing” is the strongest, and the decreasing variables are “profession development”, “achievement accomplishment”, “social intercourse relationship”, “influence of other people”. However, the “escape/stimulation” is the weakest. On the whole, the motive of participation in the in-service education is above the average. 2. Among the teaching effectiveness for social studies area teachers of elementary school in Taoyuan County, the “good learning atmosphere” is the strongest, and the decreasing variables are “proper use of teaching assessment”, “agile and effective technique”, “teaching plan and preparation”. However, the “student’s academic performance” is the weakest. On the whole, the teaching effectiveness is above the average. 3. The highest academic qualification, present teaching status, length of teaching in social studies area, type of in-service education and size of school have significant effects on the motive of participation in the in-service education for social studies area teachers of elementary school in Taoyuan County. 4. The difference in age, length of teaching service, length of teaching in social studies area and whether participating in regular in-service education have significant effects on the teaching effectiveness for social studies area teachers of elementary school in Taoyuan County. 5. There is a significant positive correlation between the motive of participation in the in-service education and the teaching effectiveness for social studies area teachers of elementary school in Taoyuan County. 6. The motive of participation in the in-service education on improving the teaching effectiveness for social studies area teachers of elementary school in Taoyuan County are predictable.
