The participants were 94 male elementary school volleyball players from 8 teams(11~12 years old). Eys, Patterson, Loughead and Carron’s(2006)three–stage protocol for implementing a team goal–setting program was used in the current study. The teams assigned to either an experimental team goal-setting or control condition. Each participant completed the group environment questionnaire, which assessed cohesion at both the beginning and end of the season. The study tool was Chang’s(2003)the group environment questionnaire . SPSS 12.0 for Windows, descriptive statistics and two-way ANOVA analyses showed that at the beginning of the season, athletes from both conditions did not differ in their perceptions of cohesion. However, at the end of the season, experimental team’s cohesion was higher, but control team’s cohesion was lower. Besides, athletes in the team goal-setting condition held higher perceptions of cohesion than athletes in the control condition. Overall, the results indicated that team goal setting was an effective team-building tool for influencing cohesiveness in elementary volleyball athletes.
