It was located in the side of Gaoping River which Cishan River and Nantzaeshian River gather together. It was a settlement with port function. It had the transportation superiority because it was the end of ship canal. And it was the place where people can exchange goods near the settlement. However, the area of alluvial topography caused not only wild-running but also uncomfortable living. The rule of Syou-Wa Period, the Lower Tan Shui River Water Conservation Project solved the problem in flooding and changed the landscape of port and re-integration, migration of settlement. The settlement in Ligang formed very early. The A Ligang Street was one of early-formed markets of Pingtung Plain. It weakened the attraction of population with the disappearance of the port function during the period of Japanese colonization. After Taiwan was returned to the Republic of China in 1945,the transportation position and types of industries caused the flourish of the first-grand industry. Agriculture had been the most important part of economic activity for a long time. However, the content of industrial structure had changed from the rice into fruits, vegetables and aquaculture. For the early immigrants, the religious belief plays an important role in stabilizing the mentality of the inhabitants. After people settled down, the temple was also established. The difference in consanguinity or places to the residents expressed the social association by their religious forms. The settlement often moved because of the floods in the early Ligang. The water management plan solved the issue of river flooding, and made the settlement established. In the age of 70s, the improvement to rural economy becomes the driving, force for the construction of the temples. We can understand the formation and spread of settlements by viewing the year when the temples were built. The study explores the social transformation of Ligang from the following aspects: the background of the formation of settlements, the formed of the individual temples in the each village, the distribution and constitution of population, the changes of the contents of industrial structure.
