碩士 === 國立臺南大學 === 文化與自然資源學系社會科教學碩士班 === 97 === Since fifth and sixth graders are about to enter puberty, it is understandable that they would feel uncomfortable about the coming physical changes. If they do not have the right attitude, it is possible they will go to the extremes to change their body however unhealthy. Therefore, the study would be focused on the variables that influence one’s perspective on his/her own body. The purpose of this study is to explore various background variables (gender, grade, BMI, urbanization and the varying degrees of self-consciousness), critical thinking disposition of the fifth and sixth graders, the effects of mass media coverage, and the influence of other people’s opinions on body image. Several scales are used in the study, including critical thinking disposition scale, media coverage influence scale, external voice influence scale and body image scale. The study adopts the stratified purposive approach, selecting fifth and sixth graders from 30 classes in light of their urbanization. There are 763 valid collected questionnaires, with 98.32% collected rate, and frequency test, independent sample test together with multiple regression analysis are applied in this study. The results of the study are as follows: First, students displaying more critical thinking disposition have more doubts about the truthfulness of the media coverage body image, while students having the disposition of open-mindedness do not. Students displaying organization and analytical thinking disposition are more concerned about the views of the parents and peers, while students with open-minded disposition are not. Also, students with organization and analytical thinking disposition are more satisfied with their body. Students with the disposition of a truth seeker put more emphasis on sprucing up themselves and show greater satisfaction with their body. Second, the more trust students have in the media coverage, the less satisfaction they have with their appearances. In other words, students susceptible to the media coverage influence are more concerned about their appearances and weight. Third, students subject to the viewpoints of the peer put more emphasis on their own weight. According to the conclusions, the study has offered a list of suggestions for future reference to teachers, schools, educational institutions and further research.
