Summary: | 碩士 === 國立台北護理學院 === 護理研究所 === 97 === This study aimed to explore the current self-care behaviors among community-residing elderly women with stress incontinence and further investigate factors affecting their self-care behaviors. Through convenience sampling at two hospitals, cases of stress incontinence in women over 65 years old were selected using three questions. Later, a questionnaire was designed according to Orem’s (1995) theory of self-care deficit to collect research data. A total of 132 valid responses were obtained.
The means score of the subjects for knowledge, attitude, and self-care behaviors were 3.6 (S.D. = 1.7), 18.0 (S.D. = 3.3), and 11.5 (S.D. = 5.0), respectively. All the research variables, including personal attribute, disease attribute, knowledge of stress incontinence, and attitude toward stress incontinence, were neither influential to nor correlated with self-care behaviors to a significant level.
Suggestions of this study were as follows: The Program of Preventing Urinary Incontinence in Elderly Women could provide knowledge about stress incontinence prevention and cure to pre-geriatric women (such as menopausal women), and urinary incontinence screening could be included into elderly health checkups. Further, health education on correct self-care of urinary incontinence, such as “Understanding and doing pelvic floor muscle exercises” and “Reducing intake of diuretic foods”, should be offered to elderly women suffering from urinary incontinence to really help promote their health.
