They are also the important connecting space of personal travels and the site for the display of urban style and activities. In recent years, because of the characteristic change and overemphasis on the transportation of streets in Taiwan urban development, the function of streets is limited to transportation only. Its role and environmental characteristic turn ambiguous gradually. For the sustainable development of urban function and commercial activity and the enhancement of streets’ attraction, it is necessary to understand categories of streets and planning manage these streetscape in a reasonable way. The essay tries to take the elements generated by various characteristics and space of streets as the analyzed items in the discussion of commercial street categories. And the specialty and characteristic of commercial streets will be enhanced. The example in the essay is Wufu (Chenggong) commercial area with abundant urban traces and is located at the center of Kaohsiung City. The survey, analysis, and conclusion will be implemented in terms of the transportation which influences street formation, the land use in these commercial area, and the urban space framework. The study contents contain: (1) to explore the role of streets in the urban framework, street category, relationship of commercial activity and street. (2) to make clear the commercial street categories through the survey and analysis of Wufu (Chenggong) commercial area. The result will serve as the basis of ensuring the basic framework and the future analysis of the influence on the streetscape. (3) to establish the framework having effect on the commercial street categories with the documents about street categories and classification, street environment, the relationship of merchant activity and streetscape. (4) to divide Wufu (Chenggong) commercial area into three street categories and characteristics by the survey and analysis of the essential street environment, commercial activity, and the facilities on the ground. After presenting the issue and solution toward the present situation, the essay figures out the planning strategy and operation according to the regulation of related street laws, and injects the local culture into the planning for enhancing and shaping the reasonable landscape of the streets. Finally, it provides the conclusion and suggestions as the reference for the future planning of commercial streets.
