Chiong Tiau-cheng remarks that there have been many discussions on Taiwanese identity. Among these, Ngou’s ‘Orphan’ is one of the novels that resort to the means of literature to the best end. So far, however, this novel has been reviewed in Japanese, Chinese, English, and German, and never in Holo Taiwanese. For the language users consisting more than 80 % of Taiwan’s population, it is a serious wonder. This study attempts to write in Taiwanese. Through a literature review, this study will examine the life and events of Ngou tok-liu in his autobiographical novels ‘Bu Hoa Ko’’ and Taiwan Lian5 chhiau2’ for the understanding of his life and backgrounds, including the events under the Japanese rule that influenced his ways of thinking, Then, through a comparison of the phonology, lexicon, grammar with concrete examples, the study will examine the how the sense of orphan was generated under the national language educational system of the Japanese authority. The study quotes the view of specialists on “Asia’s Orphan” as the beginning of a series of Epic novels in Taiwanese literature, and its merits of literary art.
