Popular Fu is a concept opposite to the commonly used traditional term ‘graceful Fu’ created from scholar, and its denomination and studies begins with the research made by scholars in several Fu such as ‘Han -peng Fu,’ ‘Swallow Fu’, and ‘Debate between the Tea and the Wine’ after Dunhuang Manuscripts excavated in 1900. Since ‘Popular Fu’ is a new term in literary genres, it is essential for us to clarify its literary prototype, progress, and especially to establish a complete system of its types. This essay contains ten chapters. The first chapter is preface. The second chapter is about the words’ explanations, sources of Fu and progress of Popular Fu. The third chapter discusses the relationship between Popular Fu and its related literary form. The fourth chapter to the ninth chapter generalizes the types of Popular Fu from the ancient, and categorizes them into six ones –every single type is an independent chapter; the subordination of every type is an independent section, and a brief summary in the last. The tenth chapter is the conclusion of the whole essay. This essay classifies Popular Fu into six categories—1. Popular Fu of Argument Style, 2. Popular Fu of story and parable, 3. humorous Popular Fu, 4. Popular fu in enigmatic language, 5. Popular Fu of prayer, and 6. Popular Fu of cognition. Popular Fu has various forms because of the numerous sources and the different occasions which it applies to. Except for the independent creation, there are also short paragraphs and sections which originated from the classics, history biographies, traditional operas and fictions, and the type of fu which contains folk customs. Therefore, the analysis of fu works and the arrangement of fu type system will be helpful for more fu works to be discovered and paid attention to.
