Using traditional approaches to solve product invention problems often relies on individual talents, experiences, creativity, and instincts. However, it normally takes a lot of attempts before the best solution emerges due to the limited variety of perspectives, and answers to problems are difficult to be found. Therefore, theory of inventive problem solving(TRIZ), patent information analysis, the judgment of patent infringement, and design evaluation are applied on the study of personal transporter Design-Around in this research. The research mainly focuses on patent search and patent scope analysis in order to pinpoint the key element of Design-Around patent. Matrix of contradictions, one of the procedures in TRIZ, is applied to solve problems occurring in a new design. The independence axiom of axiomatic design is also introduced to evaluate parameters of product design and functions, to examine rationality and level of achievement, and finally to analyze patent infringement based on principles of all elements, Doctrine of Equivalents, and File Wrapper Estoppel to eliminate all possible patent violations. Personal Transporter is the main research target of new design in this study. By applying design procedures to a new product and simultaneously verify the feasibility of procedures, providing an alternative problem solving approach to research and development personnel is what this study aims for.
