To explore the concentration distribution of butyltins in the sediments of the Kaohsiung Harbor estuary districts, and comprehend the contribution of rivers to the primary butyltin compound by analyzing concentration diffusion graph. 2. To comprehend the concentration distribution conditions of butyltin under different time and space backgrounds by virtue of core sediments. 3. To estimate the influences of butyltin on the amount of fouling and accumulation condition of sediments by means of Butyltin Degradation Index (BDI) and statistics analysis. Focus on the four estuaries within the harbor district─Love River, The 5th Canal, Qian Zhen River and Salt River─to set up nine to ten stations at estuaries, channels and adjacent wharfs to get samplings (March, 2009 and May, 2009) of surface and core sediments. This research collected 127 samples of sediments and the investigation items comprised butyltin (MBT, DBT, TBT), organic matter content, moisture content and particle size distribution of sediments. Results show the average concentration of butyltin distributed in the surface sediments within the estuary districts is within 3.5~167.8 ng Sn/g dry wt and discovered that the sediments in the channel near Love River estuary attains the highest Tributyltin (98.1 ng Sn/g dry wt). Butyltin compounds in the sediments mainly composed of Tributyltin (TBT) and Dibutyltin (DBT) averagely account for 45.2% and 40.4%. From all over the world, the Butyltin Degradation Index (BDI) of the sediments in Kaohsiung Harbor within 0.2~8.4 is much more efficient, compared with the partial wharfs in Spain and Poland, which means that Kaohsiung Harbor has less Tributyltin pollutants into sediments recently. By aiming at the contributions of rivers to the source of butyltin within the harbor districts, the research result shows that butyltin compounds in Love River were found to be diffused to estuaries. As for the 5th Canal, Qian Zhen River and Salt River have unobvious influences of butyltin compounds contributed to the harbor districts; the main sources of butyltin within estuaries were contributed by the local wharf channels and dockyards. The research found that Kaohsiung Harbor has ever been contaminated by butyltin and the concentration was up to 1536 ng Sn/g dry wt (ΣBTs). As our country began to restrain organotin compound, this research discovered the lowest butyltin percentage of 3.1 ng Sn/g dry wt, which displayed the distribution of organotin compound in the environment has substantially reduced after restriction.
