The side effects and the limited curative effects of the western medicine has created an opportunity for the Chinese medicine to treat these disorders.
Mental disorders belong to the psycho-mental medicine category of the Chinese medicine and "Shang-Han-Lun" is the classics of the Chinese medical text. The objective of this study was to seek ideas and methods in treating mental disorders through investigating the pathology mechanism of dysphoria and manic syndromes and the application of these prescriptions in the "Shang-Han-Lun. "
The present study was based on the "Kang-Ping" version and "Song" version of the "Shang-Han-Lung.". In addition, the "Shang-Han-Za-Bing-Lun, Taiwan version" was also consulted. The clauses on dysphoria and manic syndromes were first collated one by one and then the characteristics of the pathogenesis and the rules of medical application were investigated. Cases reports were used to show the results of its clinical application .
Findings from the present study indicated that dysphoria and manic syndromes were of significance in the course of mental disorders. Hence, the basic principle of treatment should be the elimination of these key syndromes. In addition, the results showed that many incorrect statements were made in previous studies such as those regarding dysphoria syndrome as a terminal illness. In conclusion, dysphoria and manic syndromes of the "Shang-Han-Lun" could provide important clinical guidance for preventing and treating mental disorders.
