碩士 === 國立新竹教育大學 === 語文學系碩士班 === 97 === Abstract
Reading is the foundation of all learning abilities. In order to enhance the quality of reading instruction and to expand students' reading experiences, the researcher tried to use three Tong Li's novels, “New Thurible of Swu Fong Er”, “Young Gamalan” and “Seeing Chrysanthemum Again”, as reading texts for designing a reading instructional program. By these local juvenile novels, we look forward to guiding the children to share their reading activities and training their expression abilities. In the class reading environment, they are extremely helpful in developing positive attitudes towards reading.
This study aim is to investigate how the application of Tong Li's novels to reading instruction affected the sixth grade students, including the learning process and effectiveness. Based on the notion of the reader-response theory, the researcher encourages students to share the joy of reading through group discussing and cooperation. Hence, the students play a leading role and the teacher’s role becomes a loyal audience instead of a preacher.
The studied objects are 35 students of the sixth graders. This study had been conducted for three months. The data were collected through classroom observations and records, worksheets, researcher’s self-examination notes, questionnaires, students’ feedback records, research partner observation feedback record, parents’ feedback. Through analysis and interpretation of data, we obtain conclusions stated below:
1.The Tong Li’s novels selected in this study have the feature of vivid characters and fascinating plots; so they successfully arouse student’s interests in reading.
2.The implementation of reading discusssion activities is beneficial to enhance the understanding of the plot and support children to understand the main idea of the story.
3.During the sharing process, students learn to express their feelings and interact with others. When they discussed the personal characteristics in Tong Li's novels, they not only obtained the chance to share literature appreciation but also experienced the affective education. In addition, it developed children’s self-awareness and independent thinking.
Finally, the researcher made suggestions on reading instruction for teachers devoting in reading instruction research.
