For topics on childhood, Xie not only describes his childhood fantasy life, but also broadens and extends the matter theme to portraying people, things, and objects in his home town. Another major topic that Xie is fond of is related with his daily life experience in the city. He indeed encompasses his spiritual and intellectual perception of the city life into his composition. 2. Xie’s research themes are suburban and inspirational. Although Xie’s children’s prose covers a wide range of topics, his creative writing themes always illustrate his memories of farm village, school, community, relative, and childhood; all of them are quite suburban. In addition, some of his other primary work themes, such as his daily life experience, his social criticism, and his appreciation of the natural world, are also very inspirational.
3. Xie’s writing style is unique. The writing style of Xie’s children’s prose matches exactly with his personality – naive and connotative. The first reflects his strong language capability in the manipulation of the Taiwanese dialect, to make his text simple and concise, while the latter proves his excellent writing and rhetorical skills, to make his text vivid, lively, and artistic.
