Summary: | 碩士 === 國立東華大學 === 電機工程學系 === 97 === Hualien county is long and narrow, bounded by the Central Mountains on the west and the Coastal Mountains on the east. Feng-Bin township is 60square kilometers and is in a mountain area with only two major access roads, Taiwan #11 and #11-1rd. There is a difference between town and country areas in Taiwan. Some remote districts where the aborigines live clearly lack access to basic and emergency medical resources. Therefore, some of the hospitals and clinics in the Feng-Bin area are striving to gain full coverage of the area in the IDS medical services project. This project aims to improve the services of hospitals and clinics with expanded mobile medical service for aboriginal communities linked by wireless network technology.
Despite of several fixed network companies actively assigning bandwidth in the Feng-Bin area, the network is too slow to respond to critical medical emergency situations. Communication with mobile medical units is too slow and coverage is incomplete and inadequate. Investment in a wireless regional network would economically solve this problem. A wireless network would be low-cost to set up, maintain, and operate. Considering the geography of the area, housing environment, current maturity of wireless products available and the ease of acquiring them and government assistance, it is possible to exceed the 100 meter limitation of Wi-Fi transmission distance by using WDS and multiple antennae. Using topographical high points as relays and long distance transmitters (up to 5300meters), a wireless network could easily be set up providing complete area coverage and support for six mobile medical units with good communication to local hospitals and clinics. This network would also provide broadband internet access to residents.
Through actual set-up and measurement, the results of this study show that even though a wireless network is not more secure than a fixed network, a wireless network can exceed bandwidth of 2Mbs and reach up to 54Mbs. This bandwidth is a major improvement over existing networks and more than capable of transmitting medical images and maintaining complete communication with mobile medical units. Given this essential improvement in public safety and the economic benefits of a wireless system being cheaper to set up, operate and maintenance than renting a fixed network, it is the strong conclusion here that WiMAX should be adopted in the Feng-Bin area in the near future.
