From Brahms, Enescu through Ligeti, the Magyar spirit has emblazoned concert halls around the globe. Tzigane by Maurice Ravel is one of the most popular concert pieces for the violin. For violinists, it is a very challenging show piece which requires a great deal of virtuosic skills. For audiences, on the other hand, it is a light-hearted and exotic piece. Although a good number of music critics have mocked Tzigane as circus music--full of entertainment but hardly any artistry, yet it has stood firm and remained one of the most favorite show pieces since being published in 1924. Ravel created this work under the influences of violin virtuoso Nicolo Paganini, and there are many violinistic references from Paganini’s 24 caprices. If one wants to perform this work successfully, he/she not only has to conquer all the necessary violinist techniques, but also to understand its structure, particular style, composer’s background thoroughly. This paper is divided into five chapters. Chapter One is the introduction of this paper. Chapter Tow consists of an overview of Ravel’s historical background, his important compositions, and his contributions to Western music. Chapter Three is the analysis of Tzigane. Chapter Four is performer’s interpretation and comparison of different historical recordings. Chapter Five is the conclusion of this paper. Heng-Chen Chao 趙恆振 2009 學位論文 ; thesis 74 zh-TW
