Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the current situation of senior high school students’ future time perspective and the relationship between future time perspective and motivational regulation. 1115 senior high school students coming from 5 senior high schools and 5 vocational high schools in the central area of Taiwan were randomly selected to participate in the study. The findings are as follows:
1. With good validity and internal consistency, the Future Time Perspective Scale was suitable for senior high school students.
2. Except for “the attribute of hurriedness”, the result showed that senior high school students’ future time perspective was generally good and positive.
3. Different systems of high schools in “future uncertainty” indicated that senior high school students were higher than vocational high school students.
4. Grade differences and gender differences interacted with future time perspective respectively. The result indicated that female students’ future time perspective increases by grade while male students in future time perspective showed that second grade were higher than third grade and third grade were higher than first grade.
5. Grade differences in future time perspective had a distinctive difference in vocational high school students. The result showed that female students were higher than male students in “future discussion” and “future uncertainty perception.”
6. Future time perspective and motivational regulation for senior high school students were positively related. The result showed that the higher future time perspective was, the more motivational regulation was employed.
7. Senior high school students’ future time perspective could be divided into positive future time perspective and hurried future time perspective. The lower positive future time perspective, the less used spontaneous type of motivational regulation strategies. The higher hurried future time perspective, the more used task-oriented motivational regulation strategies.
8. There were two canonical factors in future time perspective and motivational regulation. The result indicated that future time perspective and motivational regulation for senior high school students were canonically-correlated. There were five scales in the future time perspective of senior high school students.
Based on the above results, discussions and implications were provided for practice and future research.
