碩士 === 國立彰化師範大學 === 復健諮商研究所 === 97 === Parents of children with autism have long been using parent support groups in order to gather new information, share their experiences, and receive emotional support. During the last decade, the proliferation of Internet and communication technologies enabled parents to form online parent support groups. In spite of the growing number of online parent support groups in Taiwan, no study has yet investigated the participation of these groups.The purpose of this study was to explore the participation of an online parent support group by the parents of children with autism in Taiwan.Research questions examined the following topics: why and when parents entered into the online parents support group, parents’experiences in taking part in the online group, and perceived effect and purpose with the online support. In addition, there were five parents interviewed by face-to-face and data analyses were from qualitative data analysis of the parent interviews. Results of the study indicated that parents were using the online support group to receive or offer emotional support and information about autism related problem, and to create a network of parents. Perceived support with the group included instillation of hope, universality,imparting of information, altruism, group cohesiveness, catharsis, and existential factors. It was concluded that online parent support groups can be useful sources of support for the parents of children with autism.
