M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables and apply it to English teaching in EFL senior high school in Taiwan. Seeing that literature has been highly valued in English teaching and that literature addressing the development of adolescent girls can serve as an appropriate vehicle for the students to confront their developmental issues, the researcher adopts an eclectic teaching method and strategies to teach L. M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables in order to assess the feasibility of using an original copy of English novel as teaching material in EFL classroom, and to promote students’ appreciation of a text that reflects their personal experience. Questionnaires, interviews, learner journals and tests are used to poll the students’ opinions about applying Anne of Green Gables in its original version as a tool for facilitating English learning. This thesis consists of six chapters. Chapter One introduces Montgomery’s biographical background, literature reviews of the text, and the purpose and research questions of the study. Chapter Two is a study of female adolescent development from the perspective of developmental psychology. Specifically, physical, cognitive and psychosocial issues of female adolescent development are discussed. Chapter Three explores the development of the title character and exemplifies the issues of female adolescent development presented in Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables. Chapter Four analyzes the appropriateness of Anne of Green Gables as a teaching material. The teaching methods, teaching strategies, lesson design and research design are also presented. Chapter Five presents the results and discussion of the study. Chapter Six summaries the major findings, pedagogical implications and limitations of the study.
