Summary:碩士 === 國立交通大學 === 傳播研究所 === 97 === This study explores newspaper photos of the“99 New Citizen Movement”, which took place in Ketagalan Blvd. This Study uses United Daily News and The Liberty Times as examples and collects Chen-opposing photos from the national layouts of these two news papers, dated from September 10, 2006 to September 15, 2006. A total of 127 photos from United Daily News and 47 ones from The Liberty Times are collected. Content analysis method and text analysis methods are used to analyze the use of photos in the reports of this social movement. By doing so, this study explores the functions and meanings of photos and words used in these reports. It aims to discover how photos are used to cover and represent social movements in newspaper, and to find out if different stories are told in different newspapers. The study discovered that United Daily News tends to report the “99 New Citizen Movement” in a positive manner, while The Liberty Times tends to report it negatively. Even with the same theme, they use different descriptive words to lead to different stories. Despite the differences, this study finds that both parties play certain social roles with their coverage of this movement.
