The structural effect on both optical properties and E/Z photoisomerization of liquid crystals was also investigated. The chemical structures of the synthesized compounds were identified using FTIR, NMR, and EA analyzer. The thermal and optical properties of polymers were evaluated using TGA, DSC, UV-Vis, X-ray and POM. The textures of mesophase for liquid crystalline monomers and polymers were confirmed through polarized optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction analyzer. Molecular weight of the synthesized polymers was estimated using gel performance chromatography (GPC). Thermal stability of polymers was evaluated by TGA technique. Thermal degradation of 10 % weight loss of liquid crystalline polymers was found to be higher than 300 oC, indicating that the synthesized polymers have higher thermal resistance. Synthesized binary and ternary liquid crystalline copolymers containing N=N and C=C photochromic segments revealed one reversible and one irreversible photochromic properties. Smectic liquid crystalline polymer films with various photochromic groups fabricated in this investigation could be used as irreversible image recording and rewritable data storage systems. The results of this investigation present significant scientific and practical contributions with respect to the development of unique functional photochromic polymer materials.
