Breeding the aromatic rice variety and studying the inheritance and biochemical mechanism of aroma production are important to rice industry. The purpose of this thesis is to study the genetics and to map the aroma trait using the aromatic mutants including, SA0418, SA0420, SA0766, SA0766.1, SA1613 and SA1613.1 derived from seed sodium azide mutagenesis on Tainung 67 (TNG67) variety. The aroma trait of a novel aroma mutant, SA0420, is controlled by a single dominant and would be critical material in breeding aromatic rice variety. Allelism tests showed the aroma gene of SA0420 is different to those of other aromatic mutants. Various mechanisms and pathways may involve in producing aroma in the aromatic mutants of TNG67. The simple sequence repeat (SSR) system was established to map the aroma trait of SA0420 using 385 F8 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from the cross of SA0420 X TNG67.
