In modern electronics market, various products with the trend of higher density, enhanced performance, smaller size and lighter weight driving the advanced development of manufacturing processes, automated quality inspection techniques and equipment. During the surface mounted PCB assembly environment, solder joint defects are commonly detected by various methods. Automated optical inspection (AOI) is one of the equipment utilized in the assembly lines. This research is focused on the application issues of AOI equipment in mass production environment. Based upon the concepts f 6-sigma management techniques, how to improve both of the false alarm rate and missing rate are the first-step object in the research. Followed by the procedures of DMAIC (Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control), the key factors were identified during the setup stage in the production line. There are some parameters from the production floor are also considered and analyzed. By the comparison with different features of PCBs and machine setup in various lines, the standard operation procedures for the various devices were also developed and verified on the production floor. The other consideration is the cost issue when the AOI was applied. Technique of Activity-Based Costing (ABC) was utilized to evaluate the cost effectiveness on the floor.
