The study found that the competitiveness of the industry strongly relies in mainly two determinants: government and factor conditions. Moreover chance and firm strategy structure and rivalry are important contributing determinants to the nation’s success, meanwhile demand and related and support industries represent a relative weakness for the industry. However the study of the dynamic of the Brazilian biodiesel competitiveness shows Brazil has problem in its technology innovation system, value chain integration, and international demand supply. Since competitiveness is affected by a very long list of individual factors; a detailed analysis of the dynamics of those factors behind the determinants of the competiveness shows governmental support, scale of the production and comparative advantages are fundamental for the current competiveness of the industry. However it also shows that Brazil has problem to raise quality of his factors. The achievements of sustainable grow and higher level of prosperity requires the transformation of the industry based in the competitive advantages delivered by factor advantages and governmental support to an industry based in innovation and internationalization. In addition it seems the government role currently is the proper one however it is necessary in the future it change its role from a supporter or helper one to catalyst one in order to avoid erode the competitiveness achieved.
