Summary: | 碩士 === 銘傳大學 === 應用中國文學系碩士在職專班 === 97 === Located at Shanglin Village Leiyu Township, General Lee Temple functions as the community activity center and always hosts a variety of programs, such as large-scale religious ceremonies and celebrations. According to Kinmen County Annals, the spirit being worshiped in here is General Lee Guang in the Han Dynasty. But in the opinions of the elderly, the workers in literature and history, and this temple’s reconstruction record, the spirit has been a title referred to as an immigration officer. Though we do not have the idea of his real name and we are not sure of his identity, legend has it that General Lee has become a great and highly-respected protector, guarding the villagers against the enemies. In addition, he has been a miracle maker stated orally and vividly by the locals. Therefore, the villagers have held a strong belief in General Lee.
This study is made up of five chapters. Chapter one points out the motivation and purpose of this thesis, the ranges of the research, the exploration of relevant documents, and the steps of this study. Chapter two begins with the history of building this temple, the architecture, the sphere of religious activities and the management organization and ends up with the origin of the residents’ belief in General Lee and the influence their belief has on their life. Chapter three indicates the human activities by a field trip, including religious activities, patriarchal clan activities and recreational activities. First of all, religious activities contain paying respect to the gods, following the parade by holding burning incense sticks for the followers, celebrating the birthday of General Lee, releasing the souls from purgatory and sending out the man-made divine boat by burning it at the beach. Next, patriarchal clan activities comprise worshiping the ancestors, offsprings’ gatherings and the festival parties of the ancestor’s hall. Then, recreational activities involve Sung-chiang battle array, opera and drama groups, and gong and drum teams. Chapter four collects all of the fifty written lots, then analyzes the contents, themes and images, and thus discovers the proportion of favorable, common and ominous prophecies in the verses of the lots, which enjoys a great reputation among the worshipers and shows the social function. Finally, chapter five concludes the findings of the above chapters and has prospects for the future.
