To shorten the calculation time, we applied genetic algorithm to find the optimal setting of directional overcurrent relay. A Taipower 69kV system in Wu-jia City of Kaohsiung County is selected for computer simulation to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. It is found that the proposed genetic algorithm methodology provides more accurate setting values than conventional calculation. Through comparing with the results gained from the traditional calculation, the researcher proved that genetic algorithm was more accurately capable of finding setting values.
